Saturday Snapshot

Saturday Snapshot is hosted by Alyce of At Home With Books.  It’s easy to participate – just post a picture that was taken by you, a friend, or a family member and add your link on Alyce’s site.   Photos can be old or new, and be of any subject as long as they are clean and appropriate for all eyes to see. How much detail you give in the caption is entirely up to you. Please don’t post random photos that you find online.

I love to explore, old roads, off-roads, scenic places, old and abandoned buildings, and back roads.  Sometimes I drive until I get lost and then find my way back. (so far I’ve made it home!)  My daughter joins me for many of these adventures, and we always take our cameras, since we don’t know what we’re going to find.

These photos are of an adventure we took that started out on a paved road, which became a dirt road, and in places, barely more than a cleared pathway.  We discovered abandoned vehicles, old shanty’s and some beautiful scenery.

This appears to be an old car or truck, long abandoned.  It was barely visible from the road.  Behind it are some cliffs with some old wood piled up against the rock.  This used to be a home of sorts for someone.  There are rooms and stables built under the overhang of the rock.  They devised running water, and had a well.  They kept livestock, and had this vehicle and a wagon.  Not a child’s wagon, but a wooden wagon with big metal wheels.  I wish I knew who lived there and why.

This shows a little better some of the thrown together dwellings against the cliff.

Off to the far right you can see a piece of blue metal something in the old creek bed.  Of course I had to see what it was….

It is an old car, it looks to have crashed into the rock structure which was once a bridge.  I’ve been back, and its even more covered up, but this time I climbed down into the creek bed and tried to dig a bit of it out to try to figure out what kind of car it was.

We came out onto this very picturesque road – I still am not sure exactly where this is – somewhere near the AR/MO border.

Beautiful scenic overlook.

Abandoned farmhouse.

  1. What a fun way to explore and what great photos!

  2. Those are some neat nature photos, but the ones of the abandoned truck and shacks were so thought provoking. You can’t help but speculate on the story behind it.

    • Alyce,

Yes, that’s true. I’ve thought about that little adventure several times and always wonder who lived there and why! It’s pretty desolate.

  3. What a wonderful tradition. I enjoyed taking a tour too, with your photos.

  4. That is food for writing poetry!

    Here is my Saturday
    Snapshot
    post!

  5. This would make an amazing setting for a story! I’m so intrigued by the home against the cliff…who would live there and why and what adventures would they have?

    • Cheryl,

It is very interesting. I’ve been back a couple of times to explore. There are still remnants of furniture in some of the rooms, a garden hose was rigged to the top of the cliffs where water gathers to bring the water down to the living space. I need to go back and take more photos! 🙂
